Zooey is adorkable in Fox’s ‘New Girl’

"New Girl’’ is Fox’s new Zooey Deschanel sitcom, in case you’ve been in a bunker, or reading books, or watching political debates, and somehow out of the range of network-promo target drones. “New Girl’’ is the Zooey Deschanel vehicle that is going to bring the “(500) Days of Summer’’ actress and She & Him singer to TV audiences in all her dorky, adorable, scatterbrained, indie-flavored glory.
And she probably will conquer you, as she has me, by just being so darn Zooey-ish, her innocent beauty hidden in a mess of brown hair, nerd glasses, and personality quirks, which include bursting into song whenever so inspired. Unless you’re adorka-phobic, and suffer from an acute terror of ultra-lovable individuals, you will fall for Deschanel mightily and shamelessly. Whether her character, Jess, is drowning her grief in a “Dirty Dancing’’ marathon, or doing a happy dance not knowing her panties are showing, or inventing a pathetic stripper persona for her boyfriend, she’s a sitcom lead unlike any other.

In the premiere, tonight at 9 on Channel 25, Jess catches her boyfriend with another woman, leaves him, and becomes the roommate of three guys. Schmidt (Max Greenfield) is a vain dude who’s always finding reasons to remove his shirt in front of women. Nick (Jake Johnson) is a hapless bartender who’s obsessed with his ex-girlfriend. And Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) is a socially inept gym trainer. Each time one of them is particularly obnoxious, he must put a dollar in the apartment’s “Douchebag Jar,’’ and Schmidt appears to be out of the most bills. Why did they take in a female roommate? Jess’s best friend, CeCe (Hannah Simone), is a model with a social circle of other models.

The guys in “New Girl’’ create a warm ensemble around Deschanel - although Wayans will be replaced next week by Lamorne Morris, since Wayans is working on “Happy Endings’’ so the chemistry is in question until episode 2. But in the pilot, they’re all pitched at a compatible mid-level of sitcom kookiness and they blend together well. The guys are a typical trio of bros, modeled, as all bro packs are these days, after Judd Apatow movies. But by the end of the pilot, they’re finding compassion in their affection for Jess, and Jess is beginning to understand that most men aren’t like Patrick Swayze in “Dirty Dancing.’’

“New Girl,’’ created by “No Strings Attached’’ screenwriter Liz Meriwether, isn’t a ground-breaking comedy in any way, as it deals in the predictable gender differences we see in romantic movies and rom-coms on TV. The show is about people in their 20s and 30s on the verge of finding themselves, and it has no social satire in its DNA, like, say, “30 Rock.’’ If you go in expecting a revelation, you will most likely be disappointed. But go in to see a sturdily built sitcom structure in which four weird people form a quirky little relationship system, or go in to see Zooey, and you will enjoy.

New bride rips DC reality wife’s beau

White House gate crasher Michaele Salahi spent her weekend rocking backstage in Tampa with Journey, waiting to run into the open arms of guitarist Neal Schon -- whose new wife teed off on him.
“This is very painful for me, and I’m very hurt,’’ Schon’s soon-to-be-ex, Ava Fabian, told TMZ.
Fabian, 49, a former Playboy pinup, tied the knot with Schon, 57, in July. Asked if she’d take Schon back after his antics with the equally married Salahi, Fabiany replied: “No!’
Salahi, 45, of the reality- TV show “The Real Housewives of DC,’’ and her husband, Tareq Salahi, 43, began their 15 minutes of fame in November 2009, when they crashed President Obama’s first state dinner.

But they apparently developed serious marital problems soon after. When Michaele ran off to be with Schon last week, Tareq said he thought she’d been kidnapped and called the cops. Deputies soon discovered she was with her new beau.
Tareq Salahi is now filing for divorce.
“She continually exposes our friends and acquaintances to her adulterous relationship and has flaunted the same throughout the community, the nation and indeed the world,” he Salahi said in papers filled in Warren County, Va.

NBA Trade Speculation: 4 Reasons Why Warriors' Monta Ellis Is as Good

It's the question every Golden State Warriors fan is asking: Will Monta Ellis still be a Warrior at the start of the 2012 season?

There are valid points on each side of the argument, however, all signs are pointing towards the Warriors moving Ellis once the right deal is on the table. Trade rumors have been flying around dating back to last season's trade deadline, like the potential swap with Philadelphia 76er Andre Iguodala or Los Angeles Laker Andrew Bynum, but Ellis still currently finds himself in the Bay Area.

There is a reason why so much trade speculation has surrounded Ellis—it's because trading him actually makes sense for the Warriors.

Here is a list of four reasons why Ellis will be traded once player movement is permitted in the NBA.

Super Bowl waiting game could finally end

It seems NFL fans have had to wait longer than ever for football in 2011; that’s what a 136-day work stoppage can do for those thirsty to drink in America’s most popular sport.

The lockout is gone, and pro football is back even if the waiting game and weighty expectations persist in numerous NFL cities … just as they have for decades in some instances.

As the 2011 season dawns, nearly a dozen civic fan bases are hoping their 40-plus-year waits for Super Bowl glory will come to an end. In many of those towns — Philadelphia, San Diego, Atlanta, New York (at least the Big Apple’s Jets faction) and even Detroit and Houston — optimism might be more rampant than ever.

Kurt Warner knows something about crowning a town.

He led the St. Louis Rams to victory in Super Bowl XXXIV after the 1999 season, giving St. Louis its first (and only) Lombardi Trophy. Nine years later, he piloted the Arizona Cardinals to their first Super Bowl, bringing the people of Arizona their first NFC title.

But Warner says the biggest step to vaulting the Super Bowl bar is first setting it that high.

“It’s extremely tough to lift the expectations (internally) — to get organizations and players to set your expectation higher and believe those expectations are reachable,” Warner says of traditionally downtrodden franchises. “It’s one thing to say it, it’s another thing to believe it; that’s the biggest struggle.”

The Philadelphia Eagles have been whiffing for decades in the quest for their first Super Bowl victory. Now they appear to be in brass-ring-or-bust mode after a post-lockout spending spree.

“The expectations can get too heavy,” says Warner, an analyst for NFL Network. “Right now, they’re supposed to win the championship.

“When I was in St. Louis, and we lost to the (New England) Patriots (in Super Bowl XXXVI), nobody felt like that year was a success.”

With a new contract extension in hand and an influx of talent around him, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is upbeat.

“I’ve had a vision since the beginning of summer,” Vick said. “I’m very optimistic that we’re going to have a good chance of having a great outcome this season.”

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has guaranteed that he has the Super Bowl recipe this season, and his players are eager to back up the boast.

“This year’s no different, especially with the predictions from our head coach,” Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez says of the team’s objective. “We know our goal, and we’re not shy talking about it.”

The Jets have fallen one win short of the Super Bowl in Ryan’s first two seasons at the helm.

“They say the third time is a charm, so hopefully,” tight end Dustin Keller said.

Even clubs such as the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans, two of four teams (the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars) to never reach a Super Bowl, are hopeful of soon reaching the Super stage after seeing the Cardinals, New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks get there for the first time over the last six years. Ten different NFC teams have reached the last 10 Super Bowls, a trend that bodes well for the Lions.

“I know people in Detroit, people around the country, are very optimistic about the Lions,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said at the start of training camp.

The Lions ended 2010 on a four-game winning streak, ending a 26-game losing skid on the road in the process and further distancing themselves from their 0-16 debacle of 2008.

“They’re not perfect, not as good as they want to be on the edges,” NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger says. “But the mistakes are full speed, and they play with a lot of energy. You can see the confidence is growing in Detroit.”

As it is in San Diego, starved for a title since the Chargers were an American Football League power in the early 1960s.

“I don’t know if there’s a better thrower in the game right now than Philip Rivers,” Baldinger says of the Chargers quarterback. “This year with the kickoffs the way they are, teams will have to (frequently) go 80 yards, and that team can go 80 yards on anybody.

“Houston and San Diego could have the best offenses in football right now.”

Right now every team is 0-0, with playoff aspirations. Some aim higher.

“The only goal is to win the Super Bowl,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said after opening up his wallet after the lockout. “We don’t need any internal motivation. We’re obsessed.”

The 2011 NFL Hateability Index

The NFL season is upon us, and let's face it: Your team probably won't win the Super Bowl. This is because every team probably won't win the Super Bowl. There are 32 teams in the NFL and, by my calculations, only three will win the Super Bowl. I might be off by two.
Your season is bound to end in disappointment, unless your fantasy team wins a championship, but the most important lesson we can learn in life is that nobody cares about your fantasy team.
So what do you do? You could try cheering for another team, but that is un-American. The morally righteous thing to do is to cheer against other teams.
On that note, and purely for our own amusement, we are going to determine how hateable every team in the NFL is. Let's face it: Some teams make you want to buy a first-class plane ticket so you can fly across the country and watch them suffer. Other teams almost make you feel bad when you cheer against them. I did say "almost."
Let's go through every team in the NFL and decide: How easy are they to hate? We will give them a Hateability Factor on a scale of 2 to 10. Why 2 to 10? Well, everybody gets at least a 2 on general principle. This is sports. If you can't root against a team, you aren't trying.
OK, here we go.

This week it was revealed that many pairs of Ugg boots are still flying off the shelves, the transactions are offered regularly.
No doubt, something very magical about the UGG boots - and I mean literally. She has an inexplicable power to change the world.
By a magic wand that can instantly transform the most beautiful woman in the skirt or jeans elephants slinkies clomping clingiest break through the bush.

They are comfortable, warm, nice on the feet.
The same words are listening to his old uncle, as he politely grabs his latest pair of shoes on Christmas Day.
None of this scares the true conversion.
I'm absolutely a believer in the Ugg boots. I do not have the impact or the like, because they are very comfortable and warm,  says Katie Melville, 25, who works for an advertising agency and is now in its fifth pair.
Her friend Lexi Serebro, 21, a cook in practice, also won for  practical and comfortable they are.

Orioles brand still wanted -- by suspected counterfeiters

The Orioles may be sinking fast, but their brand is still a valuable commodity, right along with North Face, Puma and Red Bull. Or maybe it was just a local federal agent having fun with his home team.
Court documents show that an undercover Homeland Security agent investigating fraudulent name-brand merchandise being sold on the Internet made some purchases to help prove his case. He bought a North Face fleece and designer Dolce & Gabbana glasses. Then he purchased a pair of UGG boots.
The items were counterfeit, he alleges in a search warrant application filed in Baltimore's federal court, seeking to "seize" the Internet domain names of the companies he was buying from. You'd expect knock-offs of those items.
But when the agent needed more stuff for his investigation, he bought a "large Red Bull hat," and two baseball caps -- The Washington Senators and the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles cap cost $34.80, from a company in China.
The baseball caps, the agent wrote, "were of poor quality, material, and craftsmanship. The identification labels and packaging material were also of poor quality and uncharacteristic of genuine products."
I'm not sure what other baseball caps were available, or if the agent, Michael T. McFarland II, was having a bit of fun with his home teams (he's assigned to the cyber crimes division in Baltimore). Either way, it was nice to see the Orioles in such prestigious company.
